Walmart Canada Trims Chinese Furs

The Vancouver Animal Defense League in cooperation with the Ottawa Animal Defense League have had a major victory after Walmart Canada agreed to recall genuine Chinese manufactured rabbit fur slippers that were mislabeled as 'all man made materials.' When contacted, Walmart head office claimed 'we absolutely do not sell fur', which made it obvious that this was yet another case of Chinese suppliers being dishonest about their products. After confirming with their suppliers that the slippers did indeed have real rabbit fur trim on them, they removed them from the shelves right away, as they do have a 'fur-free policy'. Walmart is not the first Canadian company to deal with this problem. This time last year Costco did a Canada-wide recall of winter jackets made in China with dog fur trim on them.

Over 90% of the world's fur is produced in China and there have been several undercover investigations released showing extreme animal cruelty. Recently when undercover investigators made their way onto Chinese fur farms, one farm raising raccoon dogs and the other raising rabbits, they found that many animals are still alive and struggling desperately when workers flip them onto their backs or hang them up by their legs or tails to skin them. When workers on these farms begin to cut the skin and fur from an animal's leg, the free limbs kick and writhe. Workers stomp on the necks and heads of animals who struggle too hard to allow a clean cut.

The company which imported the slippers, Tender Tootsies, has said that "Our intent never was to use rabbit fur but we have not decided whether we will officially be adopting a fur-free policy". They have instructed Walmart to destroy the slippers and they will be financially reimbursing them for the loss. The Vancouver Animal Defense League and the Ottawa Animal Defense League are extremely pleased with the outcome, and are very thankful that companies are taking a stand against the fur industry while making the compassionate decision to only sell faux fur items.
