Tree Planting on Vancouver Avenue
On Saturday, November 20, 2008, a group of Newcastle Neighbourhood Association volunteers planted six colourful red oak trees along the boulevard portion of the 200 block of Vancouver Avenue. The City of Nanaimo kindly provided funding to purchase the trees and supplied soil/compost. The city was prepared to dig the holes with their equipment but Terasen Gas nixed that idea and said it had to be done by hand, a task which Warren Jaques heroically carried out. On Saturday the old soil and new soil was mixed, and the trees shuttled over one by one from a nearby residence where they had been kept overnight. The planting began at 9 am and an enthusiastic team of around a dozen residents completed the tree planting after three hours of hard labour. This is only Phase One of the Newcastle neighbourhood beautification program planned by the group. If you live in the area and would like to become involved, call 250-754-4656.
