Jamie Brennan for School Trustee

Jamie BrennanJamie Brennan, who is standing for reelection as a school trustee in the November 15, 2008, civic election, works as a mental health advocate for the Community Legal Assistance Society assisting clients who wish to challenge their certification under the Mental Health Act. For 19 years he worked at then Malaspina University College as an educational counsellor in the disabilities services area. He was also the student advocate, helping students who were in conflict with the university college. He was president of the Malaspina Faculty Association for nine years.

Jamie's education consists of a masters' degree in adult education, a bachelors's degree in international relations, and a diploma in public admnistration. He also has extensive training and experience in mediation and conflict resolution.

From 1984 to 1988 he served two terms on the Nanaimo/Ladysmith School Board and was the chair for 1987-88. He has again been the chair for the past three years. He sees a great need for revisiting the funding formula for public education as the needs for our students continue to outstrip resources. This is particularly acute in the area of special education, where the district spends far more than it receives in funding. Says Brennan:
"I believe strongly in a well-resourced, accessible public education system that meets every child's needs. We need a system that is flexible, has highly-qualified staff, and provides parents with opportunities to communicate with all levels of the district. Trustees need to be advocates for our students and for the people who work in the district. I have extensive experience as an advocate, and believe I have shown myself to be willing to press government for what I feel our students need."
