Finding the North Star
Polaris, the North Star, lies almost directly above true north. The further one travels north, the higher the North Star will appear in the sky until at the North Pole it's directly overhead. It's easy to locate the North Star by finding first the Big Dipper (part of Ursa Major, the Great Bear). An imaginary line drawn between the two stars at the front of the bowl of the Big Dipper points directly at the North Star.
