Vancouver Island Pumpkin Festival

Fall is here and with it comes the Vancouver Island Exhibition Pumpkin Festival from noon to 4 pm on Saturday, October 25, 2008. This unique event was formerly held at Shady Mile Market on Jingle Pot Road. Sadly, Shady Mile closed down last month, so this year the festival will be at the VIEX grounds, Beban Park, 2300 Bowen Road, Nanaimo - outside if it's nice weather, otherwise in the Agriplex. You'll see giant pumpkins weighed in during the exhibition, some reaching 500 kilograms. For $5 you can buy a pumpkin and try carving it yourself. There will also be kids activities like face painting, concessions, and hayrides ($1). One of the last farmer's markets of the season will accompany the festival, so bring along your shopping bag and load up on fresh local produce, meats, and crafts. This event should be great fun for the whole family! Call 250-758-3247 for more information.

General admission to the Pumpkin Festival is free, but several paid events will be happening in the same place at about the same time. The Pumpkin Art Exhibit in the Centennial Building will be open Thursday, October 23, from 5 to 9 pm, Friday, October 24, and Saturday, October 25, from 1 to 9 pm, and Sunday, October 26, from 1 to 5 pm, admission $5 for adults, $2 for children under 13, or $10 for families. The festival coincides with halloween and Island Haunt will be in operation at Beban Park from 7 to 11 pm on October 17, 18, 24, 25, 26, 27, 28, 29, 30, 31, 2008, admission $8. Enter if you dare!
