Crimson Coast Artists Slam

Crimson Coast Dance SocietyCalling all writers, artists, actors, dancers, movers, and music-makers! Crimson Coast Dance Society outreach worker Amanda Davis has created a performance-based competition/poetry slam style event to unite the arts community. Like a poetry slam, which gives poets two minutes to deliver an original poem better than opponents, Artist's Slam is opening the door to friendly, creative competition between artistic genres. Incorporating a loose theme of motion, dance, and the body, performance-based artists such as poets, writers, singer/songwriters, and dancers can 'slam' their own two-minute original creative piece. Improvisation and spontaneity are encouraged.

Artist's Slam is a chance for the arts community to experience the energy of performance and creativity together while celebrating our innate language of dance and motion. Movement and dance are inherent to our being. Slammers can take that theme anywhere they want. Humourous, poignant, abstract - it's all up to the performers, says Davis. I'd love to see a mix of styles and arts - belly dancers, actors or hula hoopers - a real representation of Nanaimo's creative about a performance painter? That would be interesting.

Judges will be chosen from the audience. Prizes will include a chance to perform again at the InFrinGinG Dance Festival opening night party at the Red Martini Lounge Thursday, November 6, 2008, as well as tickets to festival concert 'Here Today', a mixed program which includes hip hop, classics, and a dancer who performs in his wheelchair. Also up for grab are tickets to 'Brief Encounters', produced by Vancouver's 'Tomorrow Collective' and featuring local artist pairings. 'Brief Encounters' has been described as 'artistic speed dating meets creation under the gun'.

Twenty slamming spots are available on a first come, first-served basis. Pre-register by e-mailing Amanda at ac.davis AT or by calling 250-741-8493. Event entrance is $2 and payable at the door. No charge for artists. Artist's Slam takes place Wednesday, October 29, 2008. at the Mermaid's Mug, 357 Wesley Street, Nanaimo. Doors 6:30 pm, slam starts 7 pm.
