Nanaimo Municipal Election Questions

Nanaimo and Area Land TrustIn June, the Nanaimo and Area Land Trust (NALT) announced that it would be sponsoring two all-candidates forums for the upcoming civic election in November, 2008. The focus of these forums will be environmental stewardship and sustainability – a topic that is daily gaining more of a sense of urgency both locally and world-wide.

At that time, NALT stated that it would welcome submissions from residents living within the City of Nanaimo or the Regional District of Nanaimo (RDN) of questions that they would like to ask all of the candidates running for a position on City Council or the RDN Board. Since then, NALT has received some replies; but over the long days of summer, the request for questions seems to have been largely forgotten.

Now is the time. You have until 5 pm on Friday, September 26, 2008, to send in your key questions regarding sustainable growth and working towards a more sustainable living environment in our area. Questions must be no more than 100 words in length (including any preamble), and short, to-the-point questions will be the most likely to receive priority. All questions submitted will be reviewed by a NALT committee that may edit or combine them into a format suitable for use at the two forums. Copies of the final questions selected will be sent to all candidates at least two weeks before the forums.

NALT's All Candidates Forums will both be held during the last week of October, 2008. The forum for candidates for Nanaimo City Council and Mayor will be held on Wednesday, October 29, 2008, at the Coast Bastion Inn in Nanaimo. The forum for candidates to the RDN Board will be held Thursday, October 30, 2008, at Costin Hall in Lantzville. Submit your questions now, by email to [email protected] or by snail mail to Nanaimo & Area Land Trust, #8 – 140 Wallace Street, Nanaimo V9R 5B1. Time Is running out and NALT needs your questions. For more information, call Gail at 250-714-1990 or Dean at 250-754-7111.
