Roundtable on Food Security

Roundtable on Food SecurityZeni Maartman, the federal NDP Candidate for Nanaimo Alberni, is hosting a roundtable discussion on food security with special guest Alex Atamanenko, member of parliament for BC Southern Interior. Alex is the NDP agriculture critic and he's currently traveling across Canada listening to the concerns of Canadians about food production. Alex and Zeni hope the roundtable will spark a lively discussion on the development of a national food policy that will enhance food sovereignty and security.

Here's a definition of food security as formulated at the Via Campesina conference in Mexico in 2006:
Food sovereignty is the right of peoples to define their own food and agriculture; to protect and regulate domestic agricultural production and trade in order to achieve sustainable development objectives; to determine the extent to which they want to be self reliant; to restrict the dumping of products in their markets; and to provide local fisheries-based communities the priority in managing the use of and the rights to aquatic resources. Food security does no negate trade, but rather, it promotes the formulation of trade policies and practices that serve the rights of peoples to safe, healthy, and ecologically sustainable production.

The food security roundtable with Alex and Zeni will be at 2 pm on Thursday, August 21, 2008, at Arrowsmith Agricultural Hall on the Coombs Fair Grounds off Ford Road, Coombs. All are welcome, admission is free, and coffee will be provided.
