World Parrot Refuge Coombs

One of the lesser known attractions of the Vancouver Island town of Coombs, between Parksville and Port Alberni, is the World Parrot Refuge , 2116 Alberni Highway, a kilometer east of the Old Country Market famous for its goats on the roof. Founded in 2005, this retirement home for feathered pets now accommodates over 600 parrots. It’s run by the For the Love of Parrots Refuge Society and has heated indoor free-flight areas for these very social birds, who seem to enjoy human company almost as much as being in the flock.

The Refuge is open daily yearround from 10 am to 4 pm. Admission is $12 for adults, $10 for youths under 18 and seniors, $8 for children under 13, and free for children under six (add five percent GST to these prices). For more information, call 250-248-5194.
