Sidewalk All Stars Blues School

Nanaimo Blues SocietySky High Productions and the Nanaimo Blues Society are organizing Sidewalk All Stars, a rock and blues school for young musicians aged 13-23. The emerging artists will learn how to rock in a band from experienced, working Vancouver Island musicians. As rockers in training they'll acquire essential life skills: how to work together, improvise, prepare new material, create promo such as demos, learn the basics of sound engineering, stage set up/tech, and performing live in front of an audience.

At the Blues Underground Club in Nanaimo they'll participate in group lessons, experiment in workshops, work with guest bands, use state of the art equipment and gear, have access to a rehearsal space, and hold open jam sessions. Each student will participate in a minimal of two hours of structured band rehearsals plus 1.5 hours of group instrument classes each week. The objective is to get them ready to perform on-stage at the Nanaimo Blues Festival in August.

This program is open to all musical styles, not only rock and blues. Bass, guitar, keys, drums, vocals, harmonica, and horns will be taught. It's designed to get young people out of the garage and rocking with like-minded people who want to grow, expand, and be in a band. They'll gain confidence and be challenged as never before.

Auditions are Wednesday, March 26, 2008, at the Blues Underground Club, 10 Lois Lane (under the China Steps). Late auditions will be held on April 7. The cost of the program is $149 per month for four months, plus a $100 deposit. Full and partial student scholarships are available for those who qualify. Rehearsals will be twice a week from March 29 to August 24, 2008, on Sundays, Mondays, and Wednesdays - over 70 hours of rock lessons in total. Register in person at the Blues Underground Club on Tuesday and Thursday nights between 7-10 pm. Ask for Tom or call 250-751-1516 or 250-616-6242.
