Nanaimo Foodshare Box Program

food boxesIncreasingly, Nanaimo residents are banding together to reduce their ecological footprint by doing some collective shopping. The Nanaimo Foodshare has launched a Good Food Box Program which provides a monthly ration of potatoes, onions, carrots, cauliflower, lettuce, cucumber, celery, bananas, apples, and oranges at only $10 a box. The Foodshare buys local produce whenever possible and a five-pound bag of island-grown potatoes packed right here in Nanaimo by Herbert Farms is often included. To promote nutrition, several recipes come with each food box, and there are free cooking classes at various locations (call tel. 250-753-7470 to sign up).

The monthly food box delivery date is the second Wednesday of each month, and you must place your order in advance so the Foodshare is able to plan their collective buying. Volunteers are available to take $10 orders at the Foodshare office, 271 Pine St., several days before the pick-up date (call for the exact times). Subsequent orders can be placed as you're picking up your monthly box, which takes place at Brechin United Church, 1998 Estevan Road, between 11:30 am and 12:30 pm, and at the Foodshare office, 271 Pine St., between 1:30 and 3:00 pm. Call 250-753-9393 for more information.
