Community Building Through Music

Nanaimo Conservatory of MusicFrom March 14-16, 2008, the Fiddleworks Community Development Society and the Nanaimo Conservatory of Music will be presenting the Nanaimo Fiddle Jamboree at Aspengrove School. This three-day event, organized by award-winning fiddle player and teacher Jaime RT, brings an exciting group of music and art instructors to Nanaimo, and the wide variety of classes offered ensures that there is something for every member of the family to enjoy. Fiddleworks has been hosting fiddle camps on Saltspring Island for eight years, and these events have gained a reputation among many fiddlers as "the best in the west."

The Nanaimo Fiddle Jamboree will take place in Lantzville at the new campus of Aspengrove School, 7660 Clark Drive. For fiddle players, classes range from beginner to advanced and include several styles including jazz, Metis, Irish, old-time, Cajun, and Quebecois. There are also two "First Time Fiddle" classes, which are a great introduction to fiddling for those who have never played. Fiddle instructors include Calvin Cairns, Erynn Marshall, Jaime RT, and Trish Clair-Peck. Paul O'Brien will offer two guitar classes and guide students in the formation of their own Irish Ceilidh bands.

The Jamboree will begin at 7 pm on Friday, March 14, 2008, with class registration, a jam session, a group fiddle class, and a short dance. Classes run from 9:30 am to 5:30 pm on Saturday, March 15, and Sunday, March 16. Information and registration materials can be found online at www.fiddleworks.ca. To register for the camp, call the Nanaimo Conservatory of Music at tel. 250-754-4611.
