Phoenecia Mediterranean Restaurant

Phoenecia Mediterranean RestaurantThe Phoenecia Mediterranean Restaurant, 347 Wesley St., offers Lebanese, Greek, and Italian dishes in a 110-year-old mansion in Nanaimo’s Old City Quarter. The main dining room conveys an oriental atmosphere with Moorish arches, plastic grape vines, and Middle Eastern murals. To one side is the “Sultan’s Tent” with traditional Arabian seating on mats for 12 people, and the other tables and chairs are imitation antique. In summer, there’s outdoor seating. Tropical fish swim in an aquarium at the entrance.

The menu is more Greek than Lebanese, with entrees such as moussaka ($16), souvlaki ($12/18 lunch/dinner), lamb chops ($22), and spicy ribs ($22.50). Don’t overlook the seafood dinners, including calamari ($15) and curried scallops and prawns ($20). Can’t decide? Try one of the Middle Eastern platters for two ($40 to $57). For lunch , grab a wrap ($12) or falafel ($10) with a small salad on the side (but skip the greasy French fries). Many vegetarian choices are available.

On occasions such as New Years Eve and Valentine’s Day, there’s belly dancing at Phoenecia from 7 pm to 9 pm. A three-course dinner is usually served on these evenings at $65 a couple. Other specials include curry nights on Mondays and Tuesdays, pasta night on Wednesdays ($10.95 a plate), and Build Your Own Platter For Two on Thursdays. Phoenecia Mediterranean Restaurant is open from 11:30 am to 3 pm and 5 pm to 9 pm daily. Free parking is available for the first four cars.
