2008 Global Film Festival

Global Film FestivalThe fourth annual Nanaimo Global Film Festival will unfold this weekend February 22, 23, and 24, 2008, at Malaspina University Collage. The organizers have a great weekend lined up with 38 amazing films from all corners of the globe, including our little corner right here. Admission is $30 for a three-day 2008 Festival pass, $25 for a Saturday and Sunday pass, or $20 for Saturday alone. Malaspina parking is charged extra 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

Tickets are still available for the Saturday night community dinner at 5:30 pm ($20) and you may be able to pick one up at the Festival table on Friday and Saturday. However, if you really want to make sure you don't miss out and can be there for a delicious dinner professionally catered by the Basque Restaurant, then you should call Sue Creba at tel. (250) 753-3371 and make a reservation.

This year the Festival has four workshop/panels, including a panel on homelessness in Nanaimo on Saturday afternoon before the dinner. An Indie Media citizen journalism workshop/panel at 2:45 pm on Sunday will explore the creation of an Independent Media society here in Nanaimo which will conceivably work towards an alternative approach to news gathering and dissemination in this city. Guests have been invited from Vancouver, Victoria, and Nanaimo to talk about the successes they have had in creating independent media outlets, and hopefully they'll inspire like-minded folks in town to get involved in a viable alternative to the corporate controlled media we currently have to contend with in Nanaimo.
