Nanaimo and Mount Benson
The fundraising campaign to Save Mount Benson will end on February 27, 2008. That's when the Nanaimo and Area Land Trust (NALT) is scheduled to turn over its $475,000 contribution toward the purchase of 212 hectares of land at the mountain's summit for park use. The other half of the $950,000 purchase price will be funded by the Regional District of Nanaimo. To date, public donations total around $410,000, still $65,000 short of the amount NALT needs to raise.
Mount Benson is Nanaimo's signature mountain, the backdrop to the city. The Mount Benson Regional Park will be a boon to visitors and local residents alike for its recreational and aesthetic values. Thus it's important that we all pull together and help NALT meet its target. A tax rule enacted in 2006 allows individuals to receive a charitable receipt for the full value of equities donated to charities like NALT without incurring capital gains, and a few large donations of that kind would bring the campaign to a successful close.
