Moby Dick Oceanfront Lodge

Moby Dick Oceanfront LodgeThe friendly Moby Dick Oceanfront Lodge, 1000 Stewart Ave., sits at the north end of the Harbourfront Walkway between downtown and the Departure Bay ferry terminal. You can walk there from the ferry in about 20 minutes. Erected in 1968, it's the only Nanaimo hotel right on the ocean.

Each of the 46 extra-large rooms in this four-story building has a full kitchen, fridge, table, coffeemaker, 60-station cable TV, and one or two king-sized beds. The patios and balconies all face the harbour with the best views from the upper floors. Smoking is allowed in 10 of the rooms. Free facilities include wireless internet, local calls, coffee and the computer terminal in the lobby, and parking outside.

Rates begin at $99 plus 13 percent tax double in winter or $119 plus tax in summer. You can get $10 a night off on weekdays if you stay three nights, and senior, group, and corporate rates are readily available. The weekly rate is $380 plus tax double in winter, and the Moby Dick is of interest to anyone relocating to Nanaimo as monthly rates of $1,200 plus tax in winter or $1,400 plus tax in summer are available. This would be a great place to stay while home or job hunting. Pets are welcome, at an additional charge.

The oceanfront location makes the Moby Dick ideal for fishing charters and scuba diving as the boats can pick up from the motel dock. Divers booking through Aqua-Tek Scuba get a discount on the room. Kayak rentals can be arranged and Newcastle Island is a three-minute paddle away.

Things the Moby Dick does not offer include a restaurant, bar, room service, shops, fitness center, swimming pool, spa, business center, and meeting rooms. If you don't need any of that, it's a whale of a place to stay by the sea.
