Largest City on Vancouver Island

A reader of this blog has questioned the statement to the right that “Nanaimo is Vancouver Island's second largest city, after the British Columbia capital Victoria.” He points out that according to the British Columbia Municipal and Regional District 2006 Census Results Nanaimo had a population of 78,692 in 2006 while Victoria had only 78,057 inhabitants. Yet the total population of the Victoria Regional District was 345,164 while the Regional District of Nanaimo was 138,631.

Frankly, I don't think there's any contest and I'm happy to concede to Victoria the honour of calling itself the largest city on the island with all the crowding and traffic congestion problems that go with it. For me it's enough to be lucky enough to live in the best little city in Canada.
