Nanaimo Audio Tour

Nanaimo Audio TourA new Audio Tour of Nanaimo narrated by Donna Hill and Bruce Angus is available at $10 from Tourism Nanaimo, 2290 Bowen Road, Fascinating Rhythm, 51 Commercial St., and a few other outlets. Titled Nanaimo: A Sense of Place, the compact disc offers a pleasing mix of trivia and factual explanations along a 40-kilometer route beginning at Departure Bay and ending on Newcastle Island.

The tour is intended to be heard on a car CD or DVD player at the 12 official stops en route. The CD can also be downloaded to cell phones, Ipods, and similar devices to be played as listeners walk around. The tape also makes a fascinating 60-minute listen at home.

Downtown the history of the city is explained through hidden vestiges such as the Occidental Hotel or an old cemetery. Considerable attention is given to the coal mining era as you drive through Harewood. You learn about Buttertubs Marsh, Northfield village, and the North Nanaimo expansion before reconnecting with the environment at Neck Point.

Toward the end of the audio tour are “bonus materials” including an entertaining Nanaimo quiz, visitor information, and even driving tips. The CD’s designer Donna Hill is a career interpretive guide who has lived in many parts of Western Canada. Nanaimo: A Sense of Place highlights little known events and locations in our city, and the stories, sound clips, and engaging questions add to the CD's effectiveness. It educates and entertains in a meaningful and interesting way and will appeal to visitors, newcomers, and residents alike.
