The Mermaids Mug Nanaimo

Nanaimo's specialty coffee lounge, the Mermaid’s Mug in Nanaimo’s Old City Quarter, can provide a fun night out in funky, New Age surroundings. The purple and violet décor recreates an underwater world complete with smiling mermaids bearing drinks. The big draw here, however, are the nightly activities which showcase local musical talent.

Wednesdays from 7 to 10 pm is Jam & Slam, an acoustic guitar jam session in which the audience is invited to participate. Speed poetry slammin’ or rap artists are also welcome on stage. Fridays from 6 to 10 pm it’s karaoke – great for families. A free surprise movie is screened on Sundays at 7 pm with popcorn on the house.

The monthly events at the Mermaid’s Mug are something of a Nanaimo institution. The first Thursday of the month is the Songwriter’s Circle where you can share your creations or just sit and listen. The last Thursday of the month is the Shack Records Acoustic Night with solo performances by members of local bands and other singer-songwriters. The second Saturday of the month is an Open Mic hosted by Paul Bezooyen and Zlatko. The third Saturday of the month is a Zodiac Party where you can dress up, sing, and dance. All these events run from 7 to 10 pm.
