Cape Breton Kitchen Nanaimo

Cape Breton Kitchen NanaimoIn 2002 I wrote the first and as yet only edition of Lonely Planet Canada's Maritime Provinces. So I was intrigued when I heard about the opening of Mom's Cape Breton Kitchen at an Estevan Road location formerly occupied by a Vietnamese restaurant. Yesterday I dropped in and enjoyed a filling lunch of pork chops with apple sauce, just as I might have in North Sydney while awaiting a ferry to The Rock.

If you want a taste of the wonderful culinary variety this country offers without leaving dear old Nanaimo, look no further than Mom's. Where else to try Acadian meat pie with gravy ($10), deep-fried Digby scallops ($15), steamed Nova Scotia mussels ($9 a half pound), and creamy seafood chowder ($6)? The only caveat is that most items on the menu are based on meat or seafood and strict vegetarians will have difficulty ordering.

Mom's is also a good breakfast venue with two strips of bacon, two scrambled eggs, and two slices of toast for $2.99 (served from 8 to 11 am only). Add $1.40 for a bottomless cup of coffee. Home-cooked specials are listed on a board facing the door, and beer and wine are served.

You'll like the bright, cheerful d├ęcor and Down East recorded music. The best time to come is Tuesdays from 6:30 pm onwards when Mom's hosts a real Down East Kitchen Party with live music and singalongs. Bring your own guitar if you'd like to join in the fun. You might call (250) 753-7151 beforehand to confirm the exact starting time, however, as those wild and woolly Easterners have been known to switch the party to another night!

Mom's Cape Breton Kitchen is at 1-1559 Estevan Road, corner of Poplar Street, in a strip mall behind Terminal Park Shopping Centre. It's open from 8 am to 9 pm daily.

UPDATE: In May, 2008, Mom's Cape Breton Kitchen closed for good. The premises are now empty and available for lease.
