Nanaimo Downtown Farmers Market

Nanaimo Downtown Farmers MarketThe Nanaimo Downtown Farmers Market has launched its 2007 season. Every Friday between now and Thanksgiving, the market will be open for business from 10 am to 2 pm. The venue is Pioneer Waterfront Plaza, right next to the Bastion on Front Street downtown.

We took advantage of the splendid weather yesterday to visit the market and enjoyed perusing the wares of vendors selling vegetables, eggs, poultry meat, preserves, pasta, pastries, bread, herbs, flowers, soap, jewelry, woodcarvings, paintings, rock art, candles, native prints, and wearables. The fresh produce sold at the market is seasonal with the best selection available in August and September. Right now in April and May, the market has cucumbers, peppers, and tomatoes from the field, and lettuce, rhubarb, and spinach from the greenhouse. This is the place to come for environmentally-friendly vegetables and free-range chickens from local products.

A few of the over 50 market vendors have websites where you can preview their wares. Check out the jams, jellies, and baskets from Golden Maples Farm in Cassidy, the tie dye clothing created by Wildflower Tie Dye on Gabriola Island, the gemstone jewellry of Spencer-Mayser Design of Nanaimo, the photography by Tenth Wave Graphics of Saltair, the locally-made CDs from The Hermit’s Music, and the bead spiders by Nanaimo’s own Spiderlady Ann Smith. The Nanaimo Downtown Farmers Market is a lot of fun and well worth the trip on Fridays.
