Zeni Maartman seeks NDP Nomination

Zeni MaartmanZeni Maartman has announced that she is seeking the nomination as the New Democratic Party candidate for the federal riding of Nanaimo-Alberni. The 49-year-old insurance manager for the British Columbia Automobile Association grew up in the riding and attended school in Errington, Coombs, and Parksville. Active within the community for a number of years, Ms. Maartman served as a District School Trustee from 1996 to 1999, and is currently a member of the Board of Governors for Tourism Nanaimo and a member of the Grants Advisory Committee for the City of Nanaimo.

A strong advocate for citizens' rights, Zeni states that she is running to ensure a strong voice in Ottawa in support of community infrastructure. "The biggest problem facing all of Vancouver Island is the loss of jobs," said Ms. Maartman. "Every day we lose more jobs in the forestry, fisheries, and the high tech sectors. Our young people have to leave the island to find work and both the federal and provincial governments are doing nothing about it," she stated. "I want to present a strong voice for the Nanaimo-Alberni riding so we can keep the jobs and our young people here, where they belong."
