Native Plant Nursery Needs Volunteers

NALT’s Natural Abundance Native Plant Nursery is looking for volunteers to help with several projects over the next few weeks. The Cassidy nursery just south of Nanaimo is a beautiful, peaceful, interesting place to put in a few hours, and the plants love visitors!

Nursery work days are every Wednesday and Saturday from 10 am to 4 pm. There’s lots to do potting and labelling plants, cutting blackberry, digging trees, helping people select and buy plants, and many other tasks. NALT needs small muscle and big muscle help.

A plant salvage activity is scheduled in the Hammond Bay area for Tuesday, February 27. The volunteers will dig up plants before the land is bulldozed, then pot them up ready for new homes. NALT especially needs assistance from someone with a truck or large car to transport the plants to the nursery.

The nursery always loves volunteer workers, be it every week, once a month, or just occasionally. If you can help out, call the Volunteer Coordinator, Nanaimo and Area Land Trust, tel. (250) 714-1990, or email plants AT Even if you’re unable to volunteer, the nursery is a great place to shop for native plants while helping a worthy cause. Also look for the NALT booth at the CVIBGS Garden Show from Friday, March 9, through Sunday, March 11, at Beban Park.
