Global Solidarity School in Cuba

A group of Vancouver labour, community, and academic activists are sponsoring the 1st annual May Day Global Solidarity School in Cuba from April 28 to May 12, 2007. Participants will have the opportunity to share ideas, experiences, and strategies with leading Cuban activist educators and international cultural experts. The idea is to bring together people seeking to build a better world. Global Solidarity School students will be guests of honour at the 2007 May Day Rally on Plaza de la Revolucion in Havana. One million Cubans are also expected.

Morning classes on subjects like the Spanish language, international relations, economics, the environment, and salsa dancing will be taught at Havana University. There will be guided afternoon tours to historic sites, artist's studios, museums, Afrocuban enclaves, and contemporary cultural centers. In the evening, Solidarity School participants will visit Cuba's best jazz clubs, an Afrocuban dance performance, and cabaret performances. Note that this is not your ordinary tourist trip as those who sign up will have immediate access to Cuban activists and intellectuals most visitors never meet.

The tuition is $1,600 Canadian per week, which includes accommodation and educational trips (but not airfare, transportation to and from the airport, departure taxes, or tourist cards). Week One is from Saturday 28 April to Saturday 05 May, while Week Two is Saturday 05 May to Saturday 12 May. Participants will be accommodated at the historic Habana Libre Hotel where Che and Fidel stayed immediately after the revolution. The lunch and dinner buffets at the Habana Libre will just blow you away. Cuba Education Tours in Vancouver can book this amazing trip and arrange your flights. I highly recommend this unique event.

UPDATE: The scheduling of the Global Solidarity School in Cuba has been moved back to May, 2008.
